A man has been jailed for eight weeks after breaking into a vehicle and stealing a satellite navigation system.

Omar Shah Williams, 33, of Linton Close, Mitcham, was sentenced at Croydon Magistrates Court on May 10 to eight weeks in jail after pleading guilty to two charges of theft from motor vehicle and vehicle interference.

A member of the public called 999 after Williams was seen to be looking into vehicles parked on driveways along Frogmore Gardens, Sutton, in the early hours of Wednesday 9 May.

A Police Dog Unit arrived and found a suspect walking in Frogmore Close. The suspect ran off.

The Dog Unit found the cradle of a Sat Nav system on the ground by a fence in Frogmore Close.

The dog indicated that the suspect had jumped over the fence.

Police found Williams hiding on the other side of the fence crouched by a table in the rear garden of a property in adjoining Wrayfield Road.

A Sat Nav system with its power cable, and a small torch, were found during a search of the garden.

Enquiries revealed the Sat Nav system had been stolen from a Volkswagen vehicle in Frogmore Close.

The resident who called police found that her Ford vehicle had been searched although nothing had been taken.

Williams was arrested and taken to Sutton Police station where he was charged later the same day.
