A Supermarine Spitfire will fly over RAF Kenley on Sunday as part of a Battle of Britain memorial.

The flyover at the RAF fighter base has been arranged in recognition of the vital part the base played in the Battle of Britain.

Wing Commander Paul Godfrey will be flying the aircraft over the site at about 3.30pm on May 20.

Past memorials at the site have seen flyovers by eight planes, including Hurricanes, Spitfires and Avro Lancaster's, but this will be the first show involving a single plane.

Since the war the aircraft, which part of the Royal Canadian Air Force's 416 squadron, was used by engineers Vickers-Armstrongs for racing and air shows, but in 1965 the plan was donated to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Organiser Mike Street, 69, said: "The fighter pilot is a serving member of the RAF who was born in Kenley.

"He went to the 1978 air show and said to his parents that was what he wanted to do.

"It is nice that it is a Kenley man flying over the site, I am hoping he will do something special.

"Everyone is invited- the more the merrier, it will be nice to give Wing Commander Godfrey a good welcome home."
