The family of Thornton Heath man Devon Scarlett have said they are struggling to come to terms with the "senseless death of a very kind hearted man".

Mr Scarlett, 36, who was also known as Raymond Mitchell, was shot after rowing with a stranger in a McDonald's queue.

His older sister Christine Rowe, said the family were happy with the sentences given to his killers Horace Campbell, 28, and Liam O'Callaghan, 18, on Monday, and would now try to rebuild their lives.

The 43-year-old said: "I feel really good about the sentences, but I would have given the younger one the same sentence.

"He knew what he was doing, he loaded the gun and brought it to the scene.

"My brother was a good man, well loved in the community and very kind hearted. He never deserved to die like this.

"They shot him but still they attacked him. It was senseless, he was there begging for his life and they still killed him.

"Justice has been done but the family will not forget him."

Ms Rowe praised the work of the police and expressed her thanks to the witnesses who took to the stand, adding: "Without them there wouldn't be a case, I'm so glad they came forward."

The father-of-seven's partner of 10 years was pregnant with their third child when he was murdered.

She said: "It has been hell, I had my baby without him and it has been a real stress.

"They have taken somebody away from us that was such a good person. He wouldn't hurt a fly, he looked a big guy but he wouldn't hurt anyone.

"I'm quite happy about the sentence, but it cannot bring him back."
