Young people in Wandsworth will be able to swim for free at local leisure centres during the summer half-term holiday.

The free swimming sessions at the local leisure centres are part of the borough's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The private company which manages Wandsworth leisure centres has agreed to allow under-16s to swim for free between June 2 and June 10.

Bosses at DC Leisure have agreed the free sessions will be offered at Latchmere leisure centre in Battersea and also at Balham, Tooting and Putney leisure centres.

As well as free swimming sessions, the borough will celebrate the jubilee by hosting a huge festival in Battersea Park on Saturday June 3, which coincides with the spectacular 1,000 boat river pageant along the Thames.

Wandsworth council is also encouraging residents to stage street parties across the bank holiday weekend, with 164 already planned in Wandsworth. The normal £50 fee to close a road has been waived by the council, and all information required to hold a street party can be submitted via a simple internet questionnaire.
