Staff from Veolia are volunteering their time to help community projects in Croydon.

Croydon Council's recycling, refuse collection and street cleansing contractor allocated all Croydon employees a paid half-day to volunteer for projects or initiatives that benefit the community.

The group are prepared to help in a range of tasks ranging from converting overgrown public areas into wildlife habitats, cycle paths or play areas to painting a community centre.

Contract manager, Paul Southall, said: "This scheme demonstrates that Veolia employees don't just collect rubbish or sweep the streets but are integral members of the community and we can really help make a difference.

"We encourage residents and community groups to contact us with their suggestions and we will see what we can do."

Coun Vidhi Mohan, cabinet member for communities and the big society, said: "The big society isn't just about individuals giving up their time- it's also something that businesses should get involved with.

"I'm delighted that Veolia encourage their staff to help good causes in this way, it's a great example for other companies to follow."
