A food bank which fed 1,000 people in six months is appealing for donations to help those battling poverty in the borough.

The Norwood and Brixton food bank, an initiative set up by 18 local churches headed by St Luke’s in West Norwood and St Paul’s Brixton and Beacon Church, gave away more than seven tones of food last year and feeds about 60 people every week.

Elizabeth Maytom who runs the Foodbank said: “Brixton has the highest levels of deprivation in the Lambeth borough, with one in three children estimated to be living in poverty and eligible for free school meals.”

She added: “We rely heavily on the generosity of the public whose food donations have such a major impact on our success.”

One volunteer said: “Foodbank is not just about food - it's a starting point and a real practical help but, just as importantly, it's about empathy, listening, advice, love, care and referral to outside agencies who provide long term practical support and solutions to enable people to regain control, confidence and self esteem."

The Brixton Foodbank is located in St Paul’s Church, 184 -188 Ferndale Road, Brixton and is open on Tuesdays from 10.30 to 1.30pm and Saturdays from 11am to 2pm.

Norwood Foodbank is located in St Luke's Church, Knights Hill, West Norwood and is open on Tuesdays from 10 to 1pm and Fridays from 10 to 2pm.

People in need can obtain vouchers to exchange for food from their GPs, social workers, teachers, faith leaders and other care professionals.
