An eagle-eyed woman has been praised after tipping off police about lead theft in Roehampton.

The council tenant tipped off police after spotting two men on the roof of Sarah House, in Arabella Drive, on April 11.

The thieves fled before police arrived but the following day officers arrested three men in connection with the incident.

The roof of the block of flats was immediately inspected by the council's housing department who found that lead had been stolen from nearby Louisa House and some had also been ripped off, but not removed, from Esme House.

Roy Evans, the borough's director of housing, issued a public thank you to the woman and said: "Lead thieves are nothing but mindless and greedy criminals who put public safety at risk and cause disruption in order to line their own pockets."

Housing related problems can be reported to the council by calling the 24-hour Housing Emergencies and noise nuisance line on 020 8871 7490.
