Immigration officers raided Tesco in Norbiton this afternoon.

A spokesman for the UK Border Agency (UKBA) said it checked the supermarket on Kenley Road to see if any staff were working illegal, but confirmed all documents were in order and no arrests were made.

A worker at the supermarket, who did not want to be named, confirmed the officer had been inside but did not want to say why.

A spokesman for the UKBA could not confirm whether officers were working on specific intelligence. He said: “We carry out these checks on a daily basis around west and south west London. I can confirm there have been no arrests in Norbiton however.”

According to one eyewitness between eight and 10 UKBA officers entered the supermarket at about 3.30pm this afternoon, and left around 20 minutes later.

Girish Patel, who owns Coombe Vale Pharmacy, opposite Tesco said: “I just saw them standing there. I did not see them go in. They did not stay too long, about 20 minutes. We suspect they were immigration officers.”

Another witness said there were around three vans at the supermarket with some officers going inside and others waiting outside.
