A radio presenter could be in with a chance to win this year’s Sony Rising Star Award.

Former Holy Cross secondary school pupil Clara Amfo was put forward by her employer KISS 100 FM for her infectious love for all things music.

She faced competition from more than 50 other Rising Star radio candidates before a panel of judges shortlisted her in the final five nominees to face a public vote.

The award, launched in 2008, aims to reward up-and-coming radio stars.

Miss Amfo said: "To be in the final five is a great surprise and honour. Winning would be the cherry on the cake for the great time I have had so far.

"The best part of being a presenter is the fun unpredictability of the job from doing shows, interviewing guests and the events you can work at."

As a school child Miss Amfo marvelled at the Radio Jackie studios in Tolworth and went on to study media arts with professional and creative writing at St Mary’s University.

She started at the central London radio studio as an intern five years ago.

She said: "I was interning in the marketing department but as I was a bit loud and wouldn’t stop talking so they decided to use me for voiceovers in house adverts.

"This led to me doing cover shows during Christmas and then I got my own show."

The dedicated presenter spent three years behind the scenes before she got on to airwaves.

Miss Amfo, who also attended St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, said volunteering and learning the craft would be the best way ambitious youngsters could forge a radio career.

While at university she went to student nights out at Oceana and particularly enjoyed a hip hop night at Bacchus.

Working at KISS 100, she has now had the opportunity to interview famous artists such as Drake and teen singing sensation Justin Bieber.
