Warm beer, bangers and mash, golf and of course rain marked a quintessentially English St George's Day event on Monday.

The More Experienced Adults Golf Society (MEAGS) marked the day with a golf match at Horton Park Golf Club, with the cross of St George flying from the club's flagpole.

Deputy Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, Councillor Clive Smitheram, also braved the wind and the rain to pay a visit.

The group, which meets every Tuesday at 10am on the Horton Park Driving Range for a professional lesson, is encouraging people to join, whatever their standard of golf.

MEAGS member Jim Martin said: "We think St George's day gets lost between Easter and May day.

"It’s a time of year when there is a lot going on. Last year we had the Royal Wedding, which was great, but poor old St George got forgotten.

"We want to celebrate England and everything English."
