By Anthony Fairclough, Merton Hall Road; Merton Liberal Democrats
Councillor Peter Walker's response to being sacked as Merton's education boss, after his quite mean-spirited behaviour tearing down a schoolboy's posters, is sadly telling.
He claimed that he was simply acting against "fly-posting in [his] local recreation ground".
However, as a user of the Rec myself, I know that there are often posters on the railings for local groups' activities and events.
Coun Walker regularly manages to resist pulling those down on his morning jog.
I fear that the real reason is he just couldn't stand the fact that a local residents' group is campaigning against his plan.
We have legitimate concerns about the weakening of the legal protection against building on the Rec.
Coun Walker's response to widespread opposition to the plans was to dismiss it as baseless.
Disrespect for alternative viewpoints has ultimately led to this sorry tale.
But will newly-promoted Coun Maxi Martin listen to residents?
