A prominent square that sits between two landmark buildings in New Malden High Street could be transformed into a focal point for residents and workers.

CLS Holdings, owner of the CI Tower and Apex Tower in New Malden, submitted plans to Kingston Council to revamp the area next to the train station, including St George’s Square.

If approved, a front ground floor extension, new entrances and glazing could be added to the 16-storey CI Tower, which the applicant claimed would make it more attractive and modern.

Architects Base Associates plans to refurbish St George’s Square with trees, new seating areas and paving extending to the opposite Apex Tower, bought by CLS in a £21.46m deal in 2010.

CLS has owned the CI Tower since the 1980s and it is home to a number of national companies, such as Flight Centre, as well as more local organisations including the Coombe Vale and Beverly safer neighbourhood team.

The planning application was submitted to Kingston Council on Friday, March 9, and the current closing date for comments is Friday, April 13.
