A free course to help local cancer patients and their loved ones deal with the impact of the disease will begin at Epsom Hospital on April 18.

Managing the Cancer Experience', a seven-week course, aims to offer practical advice and emotional support to patients and carers who have been affected by cancer, whether the patient has just been diagnosed or is already receiving treatment.

Tarlika Patel, cancer information manager at the hospital, said: "Sadly, cancer touches the lives of many people - young and old - and its effects can be truly devastating. But, you’re not alone.

"This course is for anybody whose life has been touched by cancer, and can help you to explore a number of issues that come with the disease, such as dealing with the diagnosis and any side effects of treatment.

"We’ll also be talking about relaxation techniques which can help reduce stress and anxiety, and how to talk about cancer with family and friends.

"Coping with cancer is never going to be easy, but we want to help in any way we can.

"Whether you would like emotional support, advice about diet and nutrition or simply want to talk to people who will understand what you’re going through, this course could be of great help and support."

The course will run on Wednesday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm, from April 18 to May 30 at the Macmillan Butterfly Centre in Epsom Hospital.
