From having only five teams two years ago, a rejuvenated Carshalton Athletic youth team now boasts an impressive 35 teams.

And to show quality can accompany quality, four of the teams are looking to get their hands on silverware in the coming months in various cup finals.

The turnaround, according to Paul Williams, who runs the youth section, is down to an increased focus on the community and the support of first-team manager, Paul Dipre.

The club has just been awarded FA Community Status, which will hopefully lead to more funding, but as Mr Williams said, the club has the backing of the local people.

He said: "Paul and I both want to build football in the local community. We want to have these youngsters as supporters and players for years to come."

By getting young people involved in football from an early age, it presents benefits for wider society as well as to the football team, according to the coach of 12 years.

Mr Williams said: "We all love football, and it has a quality about it which can change peoples lives.

"By playing in a team, it keeps youngsters from the streets. Plus, one day, some of these players will break into the first team."

The youth system has now branched out again and created a girls footballing academy.

Young players are currently trying out for the academy side at Stanley Park High School.
