Labour's candidate for Sutton and Croydon the forthcoming London Assembly elections was left red-faced this week, after sending out letters to Sutton residents stating their council was run by the Conservatives, not the Liberal Democrats.

Despite the Lib Dems being in power in Sutton for the past 25 years, Louisa Woodley signed a letter sent to Sutton residents stating the borough's "Tory Council" had rubber stamped a proposal that will allow an incinerator to be built in Beddington Lane.

Councillor Woodley, who sits on Croydon Council, apologised for the gaff.

She was unable to say how many homes received the letter.

She said: "We send out a lot of literature and obviously I am not able to proof read absolutely everything that is sent out.

"It should have said the Tory council in Croydon and Lib Dem Council in Sutton voted through the plan to allow the incinerator.

"But what is clear is Labour is the only party opposing the incinerator being built in Beddington."

The mistake followed a gaffe leaflet put out by Labour mayoral candidate for Sutton, Ken Livingstone, in Sutton last month which outlined five key points for the borough, but listed only four.
