Police are appealing for witnesses after a £2,000 family heirloom was stolen during a burglary.

The burglary happened over the weekend of the March 31 and April 1 at Northwood Road, Carshalton, while the home owners were away on a weekend break.

They returned to find their kitchen window open and their wardrobe and cupboards ransacked. Police are trying to hunt down the £2,000 diamond ring which was stolen during the raid. The 35-year-old female resident said the ring belonged to her grandmother and was passed down to her when she died.

She described it as being of "great sentimental value".

The ring has a central diamond stone surrounded by five smaller diamonds.

Detective Constable Chris Turner said the ring may have been sold on in Sutton or neighbouring boroughs such as Croydon or Merton.
