Cyclists are celebrating the opening of a new underpass beneath Wandsworth Bridge.
Members of Wandsworth Cycling Campaign (WCC) and Wandsworth Living Streets tested out the new link, located at the eastern pier of the bridge.
It makes it possible for pedestrians and cyclists to avoid the busy York Road roundabout for east-west travel in the vicinity.
The underpass uses the Dutch principles of street design, providing separation of cycling and walking traffic from the busy Wandsworth Roundabout.
Pedestrians and cyclists were quick to discover the new route to cross the northern arm of Wandsworth's York Road roundabout.
The former east-west link has been removed following campaigning by the WCC, which was one of the last major obstacles to the Thames Path.
Bob Broad, WCC campaigner said: "The new link will open up this part of London to cyclists in Wandsworth and beyond, encouraging them to explore London's fascinating riverside."
Susie Morrow, chair of Wandsworth Living Streets, said: "Much effort over many years from local sustainable transport campaigners has gone into pressing for this underpass - it's gratifying to see our efforts make a difference in our borough in practical ways such as this".
