A planning application to turn a former snooker hall into a residential, retail and leisure space has provoked over 300 objections, including one from MP Justine Greening.

Gresham Pensions Trustees, who purchased Riley's Snooker Hall, in Wimbledon Park Road, Southfields, last year, submitted a planning application to the council in January.

Developers want to build 21 apartments in the property, a retail space and a leisure component which could be a dance studio, cinema, gym or adventure playground.

The planning application said: "We are proposing a mix of uses including residential, retail, and a flexible leisure space.

"The mix responds to the site’s history as an indoor sports venue, its proximity to the village centre and the continued demand for housing in the local area."

But residents are concerned about the reduction of the leisure space (D2) to the community, as well the impact of more people moving into the area.

Robert Richman, chairman of the Southfields Plaza Cinema campaign, originally hoped the site could house an independent cinema but is now campaigning to keep it listed as a D2 space.

In a letter of objection to the council he said: "The site is outside the retail zone of Southfields, there is no requirement for further retail shops in Southfields and the provision of retail on this site would be at the expense of D2 provision. I urge the council to reject this planning application.

Ms Greening also submitted an objection to the development, demanding the space is kept as a community facility.

She wrote: "There is clearly a significant demand for D2 use in our local community and it is important this site retains the full, and like for like, D2 use.

"I do not believe the proposed D2 space contained in this application is adequate, equal, or improved when compared to what already exists."

Other objections include fears the development would cause Southfields to lose its village feel and worries over parking space.

However, some residents are in support of the development, hoping it will get rid of the "eyesore" of the former snooker hall.

Dawn Morse, of Granville Road, Southfields wrote: "Residential use on site is in-keeping with the functional character of the Southfields area.

"Whilst the new community and retail uses proposed will, I believe, strongly enhance the vitality and prosperity of the village."

Councillors will make a decision as to whether the application will go ahead at a meeting on April 18.
