A prankster has been causing alarm among drivers by issuing them with fake parking tickets.

One of his victims, who lives in Hillbrook Road, Tooting, returned to his car two weeks ago and found the "official-looking" ticket attached to the windscreen.

Assuming it had been issued by Wandsworth Council's parking services team he contacted the council to complain.

The council told him it had not issued the ticket nor heard of such a prank before.

Since then another two people in nearby Topsham Road and Beechcroft Road have also been served with bogus parking tickets.

The joker uses "official-looking" paper which even contains the council's Brighter Borough logo and yellow parking ticket paper which also looks authentic.

The first victim, who insisted on remaining anonymous, said: "I stopped and opened it in the car and found nothing in the envelope. I thought the ticket had fallen out in the car but couldn't find one.

"I have been in email correspondence with the council to complain that a ticket has been glued on my screen maliciously.

"However, they deny all responsibility, suggesting the occurrence was simply a bizarre spoof."

Whoever is doing this is not motivated by money, like many current scams, because he does not include any payment details in his fake ticket.

A spokesman for Wandsworth Council said: “The council has heard of these reports but can offer no explanation as to why someone would choose to act in such a foolish and vindictive way.

“We would certainly never issue a ticket in this way. This may be an ill-judged prank or an attempt at a joke but whoever is doing it should stop.”
