North Cheam Sports and Social Club held a three course meal for war veterans.

Tony and Sue Millard who run the club are involved with the London Taxi Benevolent Association for War Disabled.

They got local businesses to sponsor the day and were joined by the Chelsea Pensioners.

They also arranged for a Vera Lynn type singer to sing old war songs.

The singer brought a tear to many of their eyes and got the veterans standing up and singing along waving their hankies.

The aim of the event was to raise as much money as possible to take 140 of the veterans to visit war graves in Holland.

The day ended with the London Taxis taking many of the pensioners home and some in a coach.

Mrs Millard said the veterans were such lovely brave men who had a lot of funny and some sad stories to tell.

She said: “We are very happy to have the facility here in the club, our large function hall, to be able to put the day together and very pleased to help the lovely old boys who deserve a lot more."
