By Audrey King; Malvern Close, Mitcham

Our local hospital St George’s in Tooting is already making arrangements for when hospitals can increase the number of private patients they treat.

They have already recruited a private patients’ development manager who will cost almost £100,000 per year.

With more private patients it will mean less staff and space for NHS patients in urgent need of treatment.

People who can pay are likely to queue jump at St George’s and other NHS hospitals but by using NHS services means it will cost less than at a private hospital

I am also concerned about the future of another hospital in our area now that St George’s has cancelled plans to merge with St Helier.

We are all worried about what will happen to St Helier; will it become a private hospital for those who can pay or a block of flats?

If the Health and Social Care Bill becomes law our wonderful NHS will be lost for ever.

UPDATE March 27, 2012: Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust have asked to respond to Mrs King’s letter

A spokesman for the Trust said: “I can categorically state this will not happen.

"We are currently investigating options for the long-term future of St Helier, however none of them are looking at whether it could become a private hospital.

“St Helier Hospital will continue be an NHS organisation.

"The staff who work there will continue to be NHS employees.

"The care that patients receive will continue to be free.
