Commuters were stranded in sub-zero temperatures at Wimbledon station this morning when a broken down train and ice caused severe delays and cancellations.

No trains ran to Sutton between 8am and 9.30am, with some cancelled minutes before they were due.

After the second cancellation at 8.39am, a tannoy announcement told all passengers to leave the platform and find alternative means of transport.

But information boards continued to display trains as 'delayed' and arriving passengers were left unaware of problems.

A First Capital Connect spokesman said problems were caused by an electrical supply failure because of ice and a broken down train between Farringdon and St Pancras blocking the line.

He said the cause of ttrain breadown was unknown.

He said: "We apologise for the consufing messages which were caused by a developing situation that changed the information given out. We are doing our best to get people where they needed to go."
