Jeremy Hunt MP has agreed to open the largest public building to be built in Claygate in recent years.

Claygate’s new community clubhouse, which is the fruit of two years’ of dedicated fundraising and generous donations, is still under construction.

It will be opened by the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport on Friday, May 25.

The new facility will replace the old clubhouse, which was more than 60 years old and in extremely poor condition.

The fit out, much of which will be carried out by volunteers, will take place throughout the spring and is expected to open in time for the new cricket season at the end of April.

Its main users will be Claygate Cricket Club and Claygate Royals Football Club.

Dominic Raab MP for Esher and Walton said: “In a year which will be dominated by the Olympics, it’s vital that we recognise the efforts of a local community in terms of improving sporting facilities at a very different level.

“We are delighted that the Secretary of State has committed to come and open the new building, which will be a fitting tribute and recognition for all those who have supported the project financially and all the volunteers who have worked so hard to bring it to life.”

Mr Hunt is due to open the building at 10.30am.
