Drivers of mobility scooters are getting grounded on a temporary ramp in Sutton High Street.

Despite having an incline on either side of the cover, the 5mph scooters are being marooned on the middle section of a temporary cover being used to protect electric cables linking a Christmas marquee to its power supply.

Last week, a man had to be rescued by several bystanders after being left high and dry by the sleeping policeman.

Power for the Eden Crafts tent is being taken from the side of the High Street, but is rendering scooters powerless against its three inch height.

The man became stranded on the hump, unable to move backwards or forwards as the wheels spun inches from the ground before being rescued by passersby.

Amanda Beck, manager at Sutton Shop Mobility: "We have been made aware of the issue and in view of the variety of vehicles we operate, we're advising our members to currently use the Wilkinsons side of the High Street for access.

Christmas is always a difficult time for mobility vehicle users , but we encourage Shopmobility members to report any access difficulties so that appropriate action can be taken."

Following conversations with the Sutton town centre manager, Dina Samara, managing director of Eden Crafts, said: "The cover we were using met health and safety requirements for use in a public place. As there were vehicles driving down the high street, the cover had to be durable. However, we have now disconnected the wire, removed the ramp and are using an electrical source closer to the craft tent."

The Sutton Guardian borrowed a mobility scooter from Sutton Shopmobility to test the ramp.
