Sanderstead Library has celebrated its 75th anniversary

A library threatened with closure in February has celebrated its 75th anniversary.

Sanderstead library, Croydon, celebrated 75 years of service to the community with a talk about the history of libraries from Roman to modern times delivered by local historian, Joy Gadsby on Tuesday October 18.

Library staff also encouraged children who were attending normal weekly activities to bring in a birthday cake.

A library spokesperson said: “The talk was very successful.

“There was quite a high turn-out of people and they all seemed to really enjoy it.”

The library was under threat of closure at the start of the year, as Croydon Council looked to slash its budget, but following a campaign to keep it, the service was saved.
