Friends and family of a man killed by a drink-driver raised thousands of pounds in his memory with a charity football tournament.

Steven Moore, 25, died from serious head injuries after a car, being chased by a police van, smashed into his car at a Carshalton junction on January 17, last year.

The avid Tottenham Hotspur fan was returning home from watching his team play with best friend Glenn Purvey in girlfriend Rhia Vassallo’s car when the crash happened.

His killer, Kirby Harty, 29, from Clapham, was more than twice the drink-drive limit when he smashed into the Mr Moore’s Renault Clio in Wrythe Lane.

Mr Purvey, 26, and Miss Vassallo, 23, organised a six-a-side football tournament last weekend in their friend’s memory.

They raised more than £5,300 for charity Headway, which supports people affected by brain injury.

Mr Moore died from serious head trauma.

The day began with an old boys game between older players, including Mr Moore’s dad Gary.

Sixteen teams battled it out to be tournament champions, with Kebab FC, the team led by Mr Purvey, winning the championship after a tense penalty shootout.

Hundreds of friends and family turned out for the event, which also included a party in the evening.

Wandgas football club in Worcester Park gave its facilities for free to stage the fundraiser, while many businesses donated prizes for a raffle and made cash donations.

Miss Purvey said: “It was an amazing day. I was overwhelmed by it all really.”

She said it was also important for so many people to have turned out to remember Mr Moore.
