Streatham's streets and local green areas were given a scrub and a clean by people from across Lambeth last week.

Young offenders collected litter in Palace Road Nature Garden and staff from McDonalds painted benches on Streatham High Road, as part of Lambeth Council’s Freshview initiative.

The scheme co-ordinates volunteers in the community who move through the borough and give its streets an environmental blitz.

Organiser Jason Prentis said McDonalds recently pledged 12 of their staff every month to further clean up operations.

McDonald’s franchisee Terry Eagle said: "I’m often frustrated to see so much litter on the streets, not least because it’s unsightly, but also because it has a damaging effect on the environment.

"The event was a great success and a good example of what can be achieved if people pull together."

Councillor Lorna Campbell, cabinet member for the environment at the council said: "It’s great to see businesses joining up with the council to help improve Streatham.

"By joining together with businesses we can be more effective in tackling environmental problems like fly-tipping and graffiti."
