Frank Lampard has admitted driving at 90mph in a 50mph zone.

He was a no-show at court today, failing to turn up for the eighth time, blaming Chelsea training and child care commitments.

The Chelsea midfielder, 32, who lives in Kensington, was due to face trial after earlier denying speeding at 90mph in a 50mph zone.

But he reversed his plea today after sending a fax to Staines Magistrates' Court.

Lampard was driving at speeds of 91mph and 92mph in a Range Rover on the Esher bypass in Claygate last March.

His solicitors, Freeman and Co, sent a fax to the court on March 1, informing them that he wanted to plead guilty, but was unable to attend and requested an adjournment.

The reasons given for his non-attendance were that due to professional and child care commitments he would prefer an afternoon hearing.

Lead magistrate, Malcolm Bond, noted that it was a very late guilty plea and warned that if Mr Lampard failed to attend he could face possible disqualification.

The case was adjourned until March 11.

The footballer is the latest Chelsea star to fall foul of speed cameras.

Joe Cole, who has since joined Liverpool, was found guilty of speeding at 105mph on a 70mph section of a dual carriageway in Claygate, in November 2009.

Ashley Cole asked for more time to pay his £1,000 fine after being caught doing 104mph on the 50mph A3 on November 17, 2008. He blamed pursuing paparrazzi.

And Didier Drogba was fined £750 by Kingston magistrates in January 2008 for doing nearly 70mph while driving his Porsche in a 50mph zone on the A3. He also got three penalty points on his licence.

He was then fined again in 2010 over a mixup over driving without a British driving licence.
