London Mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone has pledged to work with Sutton Council to improve the borough.
Asked what he could do for Sutton that current Mayor Boris Johnson isn't doing, the Labour candidate opened by asking exactly what Mr Johnson was currently doing.
However, he went on to talk about the problems with the current redevelopment of the town centre - including the infamous street furniture - to improve conditions and encourage investment.
He said: "You've got to invest.
"It's a shopping centre - not as bad as some in London - where you've got many more shops boarded up and pubs.
"One in ten pubs in London is closing. They are a focus for the community."
He said he would like to change the law to allow councils to dictate the mix of shops in the town centre.
