A librarian campaigning to save libraries is trying to bring a well-known indie band to play at a mini-music festival in West Norwood.

Matt Stead, 31, who is organising a music festival at West Norwood library spotted a post on indie band British Sea Power’s website, where they said they were interested in playing gigs in a couple of libraries located around the country.

The librarian then got in touch with the band in the hope they would agree to play at the Read and Shout! Save Our Libraries event on March 19.

Mr Stead, who is yet to receive a reply, said: “It seems more and more we just need to do everything we can to put the matter in the spotlight because I don’t think the public realise just how wide these cuts are going to be.

“I’ve been trying desperately to get in touch with British Sea Power because if we can get some publicity by trying to get them involved that would be brilliant.”

The event will take place at the Nettlefold Hall, above the library, and will highlight Government and council cuts, which are leading to the closure of libraries across the country.

Mr Stead said: “We just want people to know what’s happening.

“We are also going to be holding a petition for people to show support for the library.”

Last week, Lambeth Council announced two of its mobile libraries would be scrapped and historic library buildings would not be closed for now, but their future was not guaranteed.

Along with Mr Stead and a group of volunteers, others behind the event include Voices for the Libraries and Get It Loud in Libraries.
