Volunteers from the Lower Mole Countryside Management Project have put in some hard work to make a cosy haven for hazel dormice in Leatherhead.

They have been working with the People's Trust for Endangered Species and staff from Pachesham Golf Club in Leatherhead to plant a new hedge of native shrubs along one of the club's boundaries.

Hazel dormice, Britain's only native dormouse species, are now rare and vulnerable to extinction but with a little time the new hedge will provide them with a new refuge and food.

Practical hedgerow management has now stopped to allow birds to nest but will continue later to encourage more wildlife to find a new home.
