We are halfway there. Our £30,000 appeal to help send little Michael Gannon to America for a vital operation has topped £15,000.

The borough has rallied round to help Michael's family reach their fundraising target after reading about Michael's condition in the Guardian.

Seven-year-old Michael, from Kempton Walk, Shirley, has a condition called a chiari malformation a blockage at the base of the brain stem and top of the spinal cord.

He has endured three operations to try to correct his condition but without further surgery his parents fear he may be paralysed. They need to raise £30,000 to pay for Michael to have a fourth operation at a Los Angeles hospital.

More than £1,500 was raised following a prize raffle and disco at the Victory Club in South Norwood on Saturday.

Prizes donated to the raffle included a DVD player, portable TV, Allders and Marks and Spencer vouchers and tickets to watch Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Michael's older sister Hazel is hoping to complete a sponsored skydive in aid of the appeal on Saturday. Her tandem jump was postponed last weekend.
