There were a couple of early chances, with Staines’ Leroy Griffiths flagged marginally offside from Scott Taylor’s through ball.

Then, at the other end, Louis Wells got down to save from Tom Hutchinson following Harry Arter’s free kick.

Staines’ Dominic Sterling and Yado Mambo collected yellow cards for fouls on Tony Sinclair and Nathaniel Pinney respectively.

Wells comfortably saved a Jamie Hand free kick, but had a greater scare in the 25th minute when Pinney carved his way down the right and hit a sweet shot that went just past his post.

At the other end, only Andre Scarlett’s cross-shot caused Woking keeper Matt Pegler to break sweat in the first half.

Pegler had a relatively comfortable save to make from Dean Thomas’s 48th-minute drive.

Arter collected a yellow card for dissent early in the second half, but then went close to scoring when his free kick took a big deflection that wrong-footed Wells, but also sent it spinning past the post for a corner.

Perhaps Staines’ most promising attack had broken down in the 59th minute, and Woking surged upfield, only for Risbridger to be cautioned for a foul in the D.

In a bid to freshen up the Staines attack, Mazin Ahmad was brought on; but Wells’s end remained the busier as he saved a Sloma free-kick and watched as Arter sent another shot fizzing wide.

It was the 69th minute before Staines won their first corner, thanks to the tireless work of Risbridger, who had cut into the box after a free-kick and forced a defender to toe the ball out.

The closest either side came to scoring was in the 74th minute, when Staines’ defence was twice unable to clear, and Pinney picked out Jamie Hand, who hit a powerful low shot across the face of the goal, where it struck the inside of the post and bounced back across the six-yard box before being cleared.

Staines’ task was then was made all the harder by the dismissal, with 14 minutes to go, of Sterling for a second caution, having tangled with Arter.

Newton was sacrificed to bring the defence back up to strength with Kamara’s introduction.

Woking scented their chance and, after Gordon collected a yellow card for dissent having been harshly adjudged to have fouled an onrushing forward, Wells needed to grabs to secure Pinney’s driven free kick.

With two minutes left, Staines did get the sniff of a chance to win the game, when they were awarded a free kick just a few yards outside the box. Several players lined up to take it, while young Pegler squinted into the low sun, but Ahmad was unable to reprise is goal against St Albans, firing a foot or two too high.

There were four minutes to be added, and in the third of them, it was Woking’s turn to see a winning chance spurned, as Sloma was put in space by a great flick, but he rushed his shot wide.
