An elderly couple were saved when their smoke alarm woke them up and allowed them to escape a flat fire in time.
A faulty fuse started a fire in the cupboard under the stairs in the house in Malvern Road, Surbiton, at 10.30am on Saturday, January 30.
There was very minor damage in the cupboard but the couple called the fire brigade as soon as the alarms went off.
A firefighter from Surbiton said: “Without the smoke alarms it would have been lot more severe fire, if not fatal.”
