By Community Correspondent Aakash Balani Wallington County Grammar School’s annual house play event, drew large crowds and entertained them on consecutive evenings of the 18th and 19th November. House plays, for the past few years, have been an annual event for the students of the school to showcase their acting talent and their writing and directing skills.

The event had six different plays, one from each house, of a wide variety, from detective stories to wedding tales, and most of the plays had an underlying comic tone to it. The characters were often scandalous, from exotic french madames to eccentric drama teachers, from jock-like groomsmen to kleptomaniacs.

The joint winners of this competition were Woodcote, who produced the play ‘A Surprise Demise’ and Radcliffe, who produced the play ‘Diamonds In The Rough’. ‘A Surprise Demise’ was an excellently written play, its theme being a murder mystery. This play was written by Dominic Newman, a student belonging to Woodcote, and an amazing feature of this witty play was that all the dialogues were written in rhyming verse. The audience were rolling in laughter throughout this play, and they rose to give standing ovation to the whole team, deservedly so. Radcliffe’s play was of a more serious note, although very well written and directed too. Mr. Steven Oliver, Head of English and Drama from Epsom College was the judge of his event, and spoke for a few minutes about each play before announcing the results.

Around two hundred and fifty guests attended this event on each of the two days, and entry was a very reasonably £1 for children and £3 for adults. The proceeds from this event shall go to the ‘Make A Wish Foundation’, the schools chosen charity this year.
