A recycling centre will now be open an extra day every week, thanks to public demand.

The Reuse and Recycling Centre in Kimpton Park Way will open on Mondays from November 2, so residents will be able to recycle more of their paper, cardboard and plastic, as well as garden waste, televisions and video cassettes.

The site will now open every day of the year except Christmas, Boxing and New Year’s Day, giving residents more time to dispose of recyclable materials.

Councillor Ruth Dombey, deputy leader of Sutton Council, said: “People told us they wanted the centre open seven days a week, and we have responded.

“The centre has changed enormously over the last year, with more than three-quarters of all waste received now being reused or recycled.

“This is great news for the environment, and by making savings on costly landfill tax, great news for taxpayers too.

“Increasing recycling saves money and lessens the effects of climate change.

“We can only do this by working with residents, and the Reuse and Recycling Centre is an excellent example of how we are getting this right.”

Residents drop off more than 10,000 tonnes of household and garden waste at the site every year.

New contractors took over in February, and by working with visitors have more than doubled the recycling rate at the site, from about 30 per cent to mroe than 75 per cent.
