Britain’s hottest director will call action on a new cinema in Wimbledon next month.

The 265-seat Hmvcurzon will open with a special VIP screening of Shane Meadows’ latest film, Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee, attended by the director himself.

The three-screen cinema, housed above HMV in the Broadway, will show the film on October 19 and open to the public on October 23.

Its owners have promised to show an eclectic mix of blockbusters and independent films, as well as foreign releases and special screenings.

The cinema will also host computer game tournaments and occasional concerts and live performances.

Earlier this year Wimbledon’s business leaders welcomed the arrival of the new cinema, which has brought 10 full and part-time jobs to the town, predicting it would attract visitors and boost the area’s economy.

The cinema, which will also house a bar, will open from 10am to 11.30pm Monday to Saturday and from 11am to 11pm on Sundays.

General manager Karolina Kus said: “This is a very exciting opportunity for the team, not least because we’re trying something that, in my view, is quite new and ground-breaking.

“Everyone has a passion for film – whether it’s action and sci-fi blockbusters, cutting-edge animation, world cinema or leftfield independent movies.

“I’ll be doing my very best to cater to every, and any, type of local demand and to ensure that we place the hmvcurzon at the heart of the film-going community in Wimbledon and in the neighbouring areas.”

The joint venture between cinema chain Curzon and retailer HMV is a pilot project that could be repeated across the country.
