Merton Council has pledged to reduce the amount of waste the borough sends to landfill.
The local authority has teamed up with neighbouring councils, Croydon, Kingston and Sutton, to draw up a plan of action that will overhaul the regions's management of waste.
The South London Waste Plan is promoting the construction of new waste facilities but according to Merton's cabinet member for planning, William Brierly, individual residents can help the cause.
He said: "Reducing, reusing and recycling is the first step to diverting waste away from landfill. We are already making substantial progress in this area."
A public consultation on the waste plan is currently underway. To find out more, log on to merton.gov.uk/wasteplan.
