Councillors have thrown their weight behind plans to give Kingston Hospital more independence within the NHS, but demanded more influence on the board.
MPs Edward Davey and Susan Kramer also signed up as foundation trust members ahead of the final consultation meeting on Monday evening.
In a statement of support for the hospital’s foundation bid, Kingston Council said: “More local accountability and influence over NHS policy and provision is to be welcomed.”
But it has called for more of a say on the governing body which would run the hospital asking for two appointed governors, both elected councillors, instead of the one on offer.
The hospital is in the last few days of a consultation, ending on September 16, on foundation trust status.
Critics have said foundation hospitals create a two-tier NHS and are not properly accountable to communities because they can operate with a small number of members.
The final foundation trust consultation meeting will take place on Monday, September 14 from 6.15pm to 7.30pm at Kingston Hospital.
