Members of the newly formed 1st Old Malden Explorer Scout began their weekly meetings at the Old Malden Scout Centre earlier this month - but hope to spend more time out of the hut than inside it.

The new group, aimed at 14 to 18-year-olds, plan to spend Tuesday evenings getting involved in adventurous activities, as they aim for achievements including the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen’s Scout awards.

Unfortunately for prospective group members, the unit is expected to be full at launch, following a trial run with youths over the summer months.

Members of the new unit will be making their first public appearance during the next church parade at St John the Baptist Church, Worcester Park, on September 20.

Anyone interested in finding out more about Explorer Scouts can call unit leader Richard Gooud on 020 8337 1435, or email him at richardgooud@hotmail.com.
