Only 2,000 people collected Tamiflu for swine flu over the summer as the rate of cases in Kingston reduced, health chiefs have said.

There were 2,252 unique reference numbers have been issued since July 22 to allow people diagnosed with swine flu to collect antivirals.

Jonathan Hildebrand, swine flu resilience director at Kingston NHS Primary Care Trust, said: “It is important to remember that swine flu is usually a mild illness and most people will feel better after just a few days.

“The NHS locally is working hard to care for those with flu-like illnesses and we are continuing to refine our plans to make sure we are ready should the number of swine flu cases increase.” NHS Kingston is still planning for worst case scenarios of up to 30 per cent of the population (46,500 people) coming down with swine flu, 15 per cent to experience complications, 1 per cent to be hospitalised and up to 0.1 per cent (155 people) to die.
