A £1m upgrade has just been completed after a 12-year-long campaign to improve Ewell West station.

Former Ewell councillor Brian Angus started his campaign when he was serving on Epsom and Ewell Borough Council and was inundated with complaints from people unable to use the station.

The huge gap between the trains and the level of the platform meant the station was a no-go area for wheelchair users, mums with pushchairs and anyone with arthritic knees.

Mr Angus said “Even if you were fit but forgot about the drop, it really jarred your back when you got out of the train.”

Improvement works included the installation of tactile paving to help people with visual impairments, reducing the gap between the trains and the platforms.

New lighting has also been installed.

Chris Grayling, MP for Epsom and Ewell, said: “The raised platform will make a real difference to many passengers and will transform the station.”

Tribute was paid to Councillor Derek Phillips, heavily involved in the campaign to improve the station, who died last December.
