Mayday hospital has closed its Accident and Emergency department after a major fire ripped through one of the units early this morning.

All routine planned surgery and all out-patients appointments in the London wing have been cancelled today.

The blaze began in in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suite at Mayday hospital this morning.

All staff and patients were safely evacuated and no one was hurt.

Fire services were called to the hospital at 3.15am.

Eight appliances were sent to tackle the fire and some are still believed to be at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Mayday said: "The Trust launched its internal major incident plan just after 4am.

"30 patients were safely evacuated to other parts of the hospital and no patients or staff have been hurt.

"Mayday is working closely with its partners at the London Ambulance service, fire brigade, police and primary care trust to manage the incident.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation.

"As a precaution all routine planned surgery and all out-patients appointments in the London wing have been cancelled today.

"A decision will be made over the course of the day as to when these services can resume."
