A Hersham mum who survived breast cancer has urged other women to join her in the fight against the disease.

Lisa Williamson, 33, is taking part in the 5km Race for Life fundraising event for Cancer Research at Epsom racecourse on Sunday, June 28, along with her friend Christine Craig, 59, from Camberly, who also survived breast cancer, and the women on the BBC Radio Surrey team.

This week to promote the event, the women decided to don Ascot-style hats and fascinators.

She said: “Race for Life is the ultimate ladies’ day.

"It’s an occasion for women to spend quality time together and share the spirit of sisterhood while raising money for a seriously worthwhile cause.”

Lisa was diagnosed with cancer in June 2007, three weeks before she was run the Race for Life after her sister-in-law had earlier been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Determined not to be beaten, she took part in the race just six days after undergoing surgery.

“I was devastated when I was diagnosed with cancer,” she said. “But thanks to research, I am here today.

“I want to invite all women and girls in Surrey to do something amazing by entering Race for Life and asking their sisters, mothers, daughters, friends and colleagues to take part as well.

“Cancer affects one in three people in the UK at some stage in their lives, so for many of us Race for Life offers a chance to reflect on loved ones who have been touched by the disease.”

Organiser of the event encourage participants to complete the course in their own time, which means they can jog or walk.
