Roehampton University is the latest university in the country to receive Fairtrade status.

To get the award, the university had to provide evidence that it met five Fairtrade goals: development of Fairtrade policies, the creation of a Fairtrade steering group, and a commitment to use, campaign for and sell Fairtrade products on site.

Over the past five years the chaplaincies, members of the Environment Forum and the Roehampton Student Union have worked together to do this.

Chair of the Roehampton University Environment Forum Dr peter Briggs said: “Achieving Fairtrade status is a result of an ongoing commitment from all corners of the institution.

“As social justice and human rights lie at the heart of the university’s ethos, it is fitting that we are now recognised as a leader in the global movement to improve the livelihoods of producers in the developing world.”

Fairtrade products can now be purchased in all food outlets at the university and the student union.
