An antiques lover got in touch with the Wandsworth Guardian last week to say she had a bible older than the ones we featured in the paper two weeks ago.
Retired Shirley Scialanga, 74, of Eden Court Road, Furzedown, found the ornate leather-bound book – which dates back to 1867 – in the cellar of an Italian restaurant in Soho, which she worked in back in the 1970s.
It had been gathering dust in her loft ever since, but when she saw the story, Mrs Scialanga decided to get it out to see if it might be worth something.
She said: “I’ve had the Bible for more than 30 years but it wasn’t until I saw the story I remembered it. I’m going to get it valued and hope I can get some money for it.”
The Wandsworth Guardian reported two 19th century bibles – dating back to the 1870s – were donated to Oxfam in Southfields a few months ago and could fetch up to £1,000 at an auction at Bonhams in Knightsbridge on June 16.
