The future of Morden’s ailing town centre, and the distribution of millions of pounds worth of investment could be decided using social networking site Facebook.

With plans afoot to redevelop the area, Merton Council has turned to the popular website to gather resident’s views on how to improve the area.

Using information from the consultation, MoreMorden, the council will draw up their vision of how the town will look in 15 years time.

“Facebook, as well as paper and online questionnaires, will help us reach all sections of our community.” said Merton Council cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor Diane Neil Mills.

"We're very lucky that Morden already has so much to offer, in particular its good transport links and green spaces. We want to appeal to as many people as possible for their views on how they want to see Morden develop.”

But a week after it was set up, only nine posts had been left on the site.

“Bring Morden town centre into the 21st century, it's so outdated,” said Tracy Lowe in one message.

Jerzy Dabrowski replied: “How about bringing Morden into the 20th Century? Let's not run before we can walk.”

Another Facebook user, Tracy Oshaughnessy, said: “The only ones to blame for Morden’s decline is the council itself. They are the ones that hand out the leases to the shop owners, so it’s up to them to put a cap on cheap looking cafes and charity shops.”

She added: “We are right at the end of the Northern Line and we have nothing to offer locals and all those coming through Morden every day.”
