There’s been a bit of a baby boom at Battersea Park Zoo.

Squirrel monkeys Toffee and Fudge are the proud parents of baby Tiffin who, at four months old, has started moving around on his own two feet instead of being carried around by his mum and dad.

He is the 10th monkey of his type at the zoo, where squirrel monkeys have been high profile since former kidnap victim SpongeBob took up residence there.

Manager Catherine Salmon said: “We’re part of a breeding programme because these monkeys are endangered, and every time we breed it’s a success.”

Over in the meerkat enclosure, four babies have been born to parents Lilac and Jimmy, taking their total at the zoo up to 11.

But it is only in the last few days that the public has been able to enjoy them.

“We put in a shed with nest boxes to make the meerkats safe, but because they are diggers. The adults made holes underneath the sheds and took the babies down there,” Mrs Salmon said.

“But they’ve started to come out of hiding now, and the visitors really love them.”
