When a pregnancy craving strikes, it's traditional to dispatch a doting husband to the petrol station for ice cream and pickles, Marmite and bananas, or whatever the mum-to-be desires.

But now Eco pizzeria in Clapham will do the hard work for you, happily adorning their bases with strange combinations and putting one in the oven, so to speak.

The new range of pregnancy pizzas, prompted by a string of unusual requests from expecting customers, includes baked beans and sultanas, steak and seeds, and salmon and sour cream - and Eco says the response has been huge.

But we didn't want to take their word for it.

In the interests of science, we tracked down a real-life pregnant person to pit her hormonally-charged palate against my boring, non-pregnant one.

With her baby due in December, Louise Johnson is relatively free from cravings.

Apart from wanting the occasional poppadom, the 24-year-old eats less now than before she was pregnant but is willing to try the restaurant's pièce de résistance - ice cream pizza.

More of a fiorentina girl myself, I'm not falling over with lust for the dish, with its bizarre combination of caramelised banana, honey roast ham, dried sultanas, cranberries, mint, dill and a hearty scoop of pistachio ice cream.

But I grab an ice cream-laden slice and shovel it in regardless.

It is certainly a taste explosion, and packs a cool punch on a hot day.

The saltiness of the ham contrasts wildly with the sugary banana and the sweet, melting ice cream, which glides down the slice and coats the other ingredients with creamy liquid.

Pregnant Louise seems impressed.

"It's nice. I don't know if I'd order it myself, but I like the ice cream and it goes well with the other ingredients,” she says.

Eco owner Charmaine Wasif says the dish is popular among pregnant customers but is proving a hit with children too.

Charmaine worked with nutritionist Dr Schenker to devise a range that, as well as satisfying cravings, will provide important nutrients for mum and baby.

"Pregnant women are often unsure about what’s safe to order on a menu, particularly with cheeses so this will be a hit with expectant mothers," Dr Schenker says.

And if you can't find anything on the menu to suit your needs, the restaurant will endeavour to cater to your desires.

“As long as it’s food and it’s good quality I’ll put anything on the pizza a pregnant woman wants," says Charmaine.

Eco has a branch at 162 Clapham High Street.
