A Surrey town known for its connections to royalty and racing has been ranked as one of the UK’s best places to live.
The list, published by Garrington Property Finders, revealed the UK’s top 20 places to live in the UK and Wales.
Epsom was ranked in third position on the list, coming under St Albans in Hertfordshire and Tyford in Berkshire.
But Epsom wasn’t the only town in Surrey to make the list, as six other Surrey locations were also featured, including Godalming at number six, Farncombe at number nine and Guildford at number eleven.
Many of the most desirable places to live in England and Wales became better value in 2023 as property prices fell.
Epsom made the list on account of its links to royalty and for being the location to host the Epsom Derby, a popular event in the racing calendar and a favourite of the late Queen Elizabeth.
The historic market town is located 15 miles from south west London, with links to several of the city’s main stations by train from Epsom, taking around 40 minutes.
According to RightMove, properties in Epsom had an overall average price of £599,003 over the last year.
Detached properties sold for an average of £990,854, semi-detached properties sold for an average price of £628,908, and flats for an average of £314,014, with 889 properties sold over the past year.
The town is also famous for its Epsom Salts, which were discovered in the region in 1618 by a farmer and are still widely used today for their healing properties.
Epsom is also famous for its historical buildings such as The Assembly Rooms built in 1690 and the Clock Tower built in 1847.
A lot of Epsom’s striking architecture and historical buildings can be attributed to the town’s history as a spa town during the Georgian era.
Today Epsom is still a popular market town, with its Market Place playing host to farmers markets, food fairs and weekly antiques markets.
It’s also a popular spot for anyone looking to get outdoors, located on the edge of the North Downs stretching from Surrey to Dover, with wonderful views of the countryside, making it an ideal spot for cyclists and walkers.
For anyone looking for a lighter stroll, Epsom Common is a popular spot and was awarded a Green Flag for its 17th consecutive year in 2023.
Epsom’s popular derby remains a popular event in the sporting and equestrian calendar, and the iconic racetrack has been used as a filming location for a number of movies including GoldenEye (1995) and Love Actually (2003).
